Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced his next course of action after the Orange Democratic Movement National Executive Committee (NEC) voted to remove him as the party’s Secretary General.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, under the Linda Mwananchi movement, Sifuna said he would challenge the decision in court, arguing that his removal was unlawful and did not follow the party’s constitution.

He said the decision was similar to an earlier attempt to remove him in February, which was overturned after it was challenged in court.

“After consultation with our legal teams earlier this morning, it has been decided to once again test the propriety of the purported ouster in the courts because we are convinced it should suffer the same fate as the first one in February,” the statement said.

Sifuna maintained that the latest decision by the ODM NEC was unprocedural, unfair, and contrary to the party’s constitution.

Linda Mwananchi Postpones Rallies

The statement was released as the Linda Mwananchi movement announced the postponement of its Kisii and Keroka rallies that had been scheduled for Friday, June 26. The rallies have been pushed to Friday, July 3.

The movement said the change would allow its members to join other Kenyans in commemorating victims of the 2024 Gen Z protests and stand in solidarity with families of those who were killed or forcibly disappeared.

It also warned of possible police brutality and unlawful arrests during the peaceful commemoration events, calling on police to protect all citizens taking part.

“We call upon the police to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens who will participate in the peaceful commemoration activities,” read part of the statement.

The movement further criticised the government’s handling of compensation for victims of the 2024 protests, saying financial assistance alone is not enough without justice and accountability.

It accused the government of lacking transparency in the compensation process and said meaningful reconciliation cannot happen until those responsible for the killings are held accountable.

How Sifuna Was Removed

Sifuna’s statement comes a day after the ODM NEC officially removed him as the party’s secretary-general.

The committee said it had adopted the recommendations of the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee, which investigated a complaint against him.

Acting Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo said the resolution took immediate effect, meaning Sifuna no longer holds the office of secretary-general.

“The NEC received and considered the report of the party’s Internal Dispute Resolution Committee and, after going through the findings under Article 74(2) of the party constitution, unanimously resolved to adopt the committee’s recommendations and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna,” Omanyo said.
