Days After Western Tour, Sifuna Wins Backing From Luhya Elders

The Luhya Elders have decided to rally behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s growing political ambitions, endorsing him to work with other opposition leaders as they seek to form the next government.

Speaking during a press briefing on August 1, 2026, the council’s Vice Chairperson,  Noah Wekesa, said the elders fully support Sifuna’s efforts and believe he has won the confidence of many Kenyans.

The endorsement comes just days after Sifuna toured Western Kenya during rallies held on July 25 and 26 in Bungoma, where he received a warm welcome from supporters across the region.

It also comes shortly after the Mulembe community living in Nairobi publicly backed President William Ruto’s re-election bid, declared Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi as the Luhya community’s leader, and stated that they do not recognise Sifuna as their leader.

Luhya Elders Back Sifuna

Wekesa said the elders are proud of Sifuna and are encouraged by the reception he has received across the country.

“We have agreed as the Luhya Elders Forum that our son Edwin Sifuna has been accepted by a lot of Kenyans. Since he’s our son, we naturally want to state very clearly that we support his efforts to join others in the political arena,” he said.

According to the Luhya elder, Sifuna’s political journey has not been limited to Western Kenya.

“In fact, we are glad that Sifuna’s journey did not start in Luhya land. This young man has been to close to 17 counties before he came here, and we have seen mammoth crowds of young people, old people and ordinary Kenyans supporting him.”

‘Go Ahead and Provide New Leadership’

The Luhya elders said they stand firmly behind the Nairobi senator and encouraged him to continue working with other opposition leaders.

“We as elders are right behind him. We are wishing him well. If he were here, we would put our hands on his head and say, Son, go ahead and join others in the effort of trying to produce a new leadership in Kenya.”

Wekesa acknowledged that Sifuna is not the only leader in the opposition and urged him to build alliances with like-minded politicians.

“We are quite aware that he is not alone in the opposition. There are many leaders of their own political parties in the arena. We are saying, join these people, talk to them and agree on the way forward.”

He maintained the council’s support by saying, “We as Luhyas are right behind Sifuna in the endeavour of being one of the leaders of this country.”
