Can Ruto Win in 2027 With Edwin Sifuna as His Running Mate? Analysts Weigh In

This sounds very unlikely, in fact almost impossible, but since there are no permanent enemies in politics, what if President William Ruto chooses vibrant Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as his running mate in the 2027 general election?

The Linda Mwananchi leader has gained popularity since the death of Raila Odinga and the subsequent election of Oburu Oginga as ODM Party leader.

TIFA’s latest opinion poll puts Sifuna second after President Ruto and ahead of all the Opposition leaders, making him a hotcake ahead of the next polls.

Speaking to Hivileo.co.ke, Political analyst and Governance Expert Dr. Luchetu Likaka said a William Ruto–Edwin Sifuna ticket in 2027 is politically intriguing and highly improbable.

However, Dr. Likaka said Kenyan politics has repeatedly demonstrated that ideological differences can give way to electoral arithmetic, coalition building and political survival.

Similarly, political analyst Maimuna Mwidau said the chances of the two leaders working together are very low since they both hold strongly opposing positions.

“It is important to note that this assumption is very unlikely due to the strong positions each leader holds in their forte, and it may disturb the larger partnerships in both ODM and UDA in Mt Kenya,” Mwidau said.

Analyst Dismass Mokua stated that Kenya will witness unprecedented political permutations and combinations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Mokua, the 2027 general elections will be characterized by a multiplicity of interests and aspirations.

He explained that the 2027 presidential election will be a simultaneous equation informed by known knowns, unknown knowns, known unknowns and unknown unknowns.

“The probability therefore does exist of President Ruto reconstructing and rebuilding his coalition. He therefore may consider Sen Edwin Sifuna as his running mate, given the fact that politicians explore all possibilities,” he said.

What Political Advantage Would Sifuna Bring to Ruto’s Ticket?

Likaka said Sifuna would bring three potentially valuable political assets: generational appeal, urban political visibility and a foothold in Western Kenya.

He argued that Sifuna has developed a national profile considerably larger than that of an ordinary first-term senator.

“His combative communication style, visibility in Parliament and ability to communicate effectively with younger and urban audiences have given him considerable political recognition,” he said.

More importantly, Likaka said Sifuna could help Ruto reposition his ticket as one representing generational transition rather than simply the established political elite.

The Analyst said that picture could become important in an election where economic conditions, unemployment, governance and dissatisfaction among younger voters are likely to feature prominently.

Mwidau said Sifuna’s political advantage can only be felt if Ruto finds a way of retaining Oburu’s ODM wing, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula.

“This combination may add to the percentage of popularity and give a head start to the team, assuming all else remains constant; that is, the other faction of ODM stays put in the broad base including Wetangula and Mudavadi,” she said.

Can Ruto-Sifuna Ticket Win Western Kenya and Nairobi?

Likaka cautioned against the assumption that an individual (Sifuna included) politician cannot deliver an ethnic community, county or region

He stated that Western Kenya is politically plural, with Mudavadi, Wetang’ula, Oparanya, Sifuna and emerging leaders representing different networks and constituencies.

The Analyst said there is already an intense contest over who speaks politically for the region, with Wetang’ula and Oparanya among those positioning themselves around the 2027 succession and running-mate debate.

“Sifuna’s emergence could nevertheless disrupt the traditional Western leadership hierarchy. His recent mobilisation has already attracted political attention in the region,” he said.

Besides, Likaka said the government can provide a solution for the criticism Kenya Kwanza government has faced in Nairobi.

He stated that Sifuna’s political strength in the Capital could add value to Ruto’s vote basket since the electorate constitutes the youth who are directly involved in national politics.

“In Nairobi, his value could arguably be greater. As Nairobi Senator, Sifuna has political visibility among an electorate that is younger, ethnically diverse and heavily exposed to national political debates. He could provide Ruto with an aggressive urban campaigner capable of engaging constituencies where the government has faced substantial criticism,” he said.

Mwidau offered a contrasting view on the Western voting bloc but agreed with Likaka that Sifuna could deliver the Nairobi votes.

“This combo may also generate the tribal vote of Western and the urban vote of Nairobi from Sifuna’s constituency,” she said.

However, Likaka still warned that Sifuna would not automatically transfer his Nairobi supporters to President Ruto.

He emphasized that economic perceptions, government performance and candidate credibility increasingly influence Presidential voting.

“A running mate can complement a presidential candidate; he cannot erase dissatisfaction with the incumbent administration,” he said.

Ruto Will Lose with Sifuna as His Running Mate

On the other hand, Mokua said President Ruto will lose if he abandons Mudavadi and Wetangula in favour of Sifuna.

Mokua said President Ruto has a very high chance of securing a second term under the Kenya Kwanza coalition, which Mudavadi and Wetang’ula anchor.

The Analyst said that although Mudavadi and Wetang’ula cannot guarantee President Ruto a second term, abandoning the two key Kenya Kwanza principals who helped him win the 2022 election would amount to political suicide and guarantee his loss.

“Abandoning Mudavadi and Wetangula in favor of Sifuna will be historic and will make President Ruto the first one-term president in Kenya,” he said.

Both Likaka and Mokua pointed out that Mudavadi and Wetang’ula were key members of the Kenya Kwanza coalition that brought Ruto to power in 2022.

Dr. Likaka also warned that the impact on Mudavadi and Wetang’ula is the most dangerous part of such a strategy for President Ruto.

He explained that Ruto cannot analyse what Sifuna brings without simultaneously calculating what Sifuna’s entry would cost him.

He said the two have invested heavily in their political networks to advance the argument that Western Kenya deserves a larger share of national political power.

“Choosing Sifuna could therefore be interpreted by existing allies as Ruto bypassing leaders who supported him when doing so carried greater political risk in favour of a politician who spent much of his recent career opposing him,” he said.

Mwidau also said the success of a Ruto-Sifuna ticket is dependent on the response from Mudavadi and Wetang’ula.

“The impact this Combination will have on Wetangula and Mudavadi is yet to be seen, but let’s expect the two to go back to the drawing board either to negotiate afresh with the broad base or rejoin the opposition,” Mwidau said.

Mokua said President Ruto can accommodate multiplicity of interests, politicians and political parties under the Kenya Kwanza architecture without offending anchor principals.

He recalled that Mudavadi’s “earthquake moment” energized President Ruto’s 2022 presidential campaign.

The analyst said voters in Western Kenya determined the outcome of the 2022 presidential election.

Will Young Voters Rally Behind Sifuna?

Likaka said  Sifuna has characteristics that resonate with sections of younger voters.

However, he said there is an important distinction between support for Sifuna and transferable support for Ruto.

He stated that  Kenya’s Gen Z political mobilisation has demonstrated considerable scepticism towards political parties and established political elites.

Therefore, Likaka argued that young voters may interpret a Ruto-Sifuna arrangement not as generational renewal but as the absorption of another opposition figure into the establishment.

“The political outcome would depend heavily on the narrative surrounding the alliance. If Sifuna joined Ruto merely as a running mate, he could lose some of the authenticity that currently makes him attractive to younger voters. If, however, the arrangement emerged from a broader political realignment built around specific reforms such as employment, taxation, governance, corruption, police accountability and greater youth participation, it could become considerably more electorally persuasive,” he said.

On this, Mwidau said the senator might play an important role in securing support from youthful, non-tribal voters, particularly those living in urban areas.

“The youth voters have been predominantly non tribal in the urban areas; therefore, they may play a crucial role in adding to the numbers for the Presidency,” she said.

What Happens to Kindiki?

Likaka said such a Ruto-Sifuna Ticket cannot be considered without examining its impact on Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, including the possibility of removing him from the position.

“There is also another major consideration: Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. Any serious discussion of Ruto’s 2027 running mate cannot ignore the political consequences of replacing a sitting deputy president,” Likaka said.

He referred to a May 2026 TIFA survey which reported Kindiki as the preferred Ruto running mate among those surveyed, at 59 per cent.

“Replacing him would therefore have consequences not only in Western Kenya but also within Ruto’s existing coalition and particularly the Mt Kenya political equation. For Ruto, the relevant calculation would consequently be whether the additional Western, Nairobi and youth votes potentially attracted through Sifuna would exceed the votes and elite support potentially lost elsewhere.”
