5 Universities Announce Master’s and PhD Scholarships

Five universities have announced postgraduate scholarship opportunities for the 2026/2027 academic year, inviting qualified candidates to apply for Master’s and PhD programmes in various fields.

The scholarships target programmes in education, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and are supported by initiatives including the African Development Fund (ADF), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Harnessing Education Research for Impact in Africa (HERI-Africa) Programme. 

The institutions include Kisii University, Tharaka University, Garissa University, Tom Mboya University and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

Master’s and PhD Scholarship Up for Grabs at Five Universities 

Kisii University is inviting applications for postgraduate research scholarships in Foundational Literacy through the Harnessing Education Research for Impact in Africa (HERI-Africa) Programme. 

According to the university, the initiative seeks to strengthen Africa-led education research and improve learning outcomes across the continent.

“The Language Education Research Chair at Kisii University invites applications from qualified candidates for competitive postgraduate research scholarships in Foundational Literacy under the Harnessing Education Research for Impact in Africa (HERI-Africa) Programme,” read part of the advertisement.

Meanwhile, Tharaka University, Garissa University, Tom Mboya University and MMUST have advertised scholarships under the Higher Education Science and Technology (HEST) Phase II Project, supported by the African Development Fund (ADF) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). 

The scholarships target Master’s and PhD studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Eligibility and Application Requirements 

At Tharaka University, applicants can pursue Master’s degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Science.

Additionally, Garissa University is offering Master’s and PhD scholarships in Leather Technology and related STEM fields, as well as professional training opportunities.

Tom Mboya University has advertised scholarships in engineering and information technology-related programmes, while MMUST is offering scholarships in engineering, ICT and selected Bachelor’s engineering laboratory programmes.

Furthermore, each university has published its own eligibility requirements and application procedures. 

Applicants are advised to visit the respective university websites to access detailed scholarship information and submit the required documents before the specified deadlines.

The application deadlines range from August 11 to August 18, 2026, depending on the institution, and interested candidates are encouraged to submit their applications before the respective closing dates.

The universities said they are committed to equal-opportunity recruitment and encouraged applications from women, persons with disabilities, and candidates from marginalized or underrepresented communities, where applicable. 

In addition, the institutions cautioned applicants against canvassing and submitting false information or forged documents, noting that such actions would lead to disqualification.
