Mob justice struck Luanda town, Vihiga County, after an angry crowd violently lynched two men suspected of stealing motorbikes.
Confirming the incident, Luanda Sub-county OCPD inspector Richard Siele, the victims, Javan Asiekwe (27) and Danston Onyango (23), were tracked down from Emuhaya and dragged to the Ebusakami junction.
They were reportedly caught in the act of dismantling a Boxer 100 motorbike, black in color, before the fatal attack.
Siele said the suspects were found tearing apart the motorbike before being questioned by the boda boda operators.
“The members of public cornered the two suspects dismantling a motorbike Boxer 100 in Ebuyangu Emuhaya sub-county. They were bought to Ebusakami after they failed to explain why they were dismantling the motorbike something that forced the mob to beat them to death,” said Siele.
The motorbike by the registration number KMFN 241S is said to have been stolen from Siaya.
According to Inspector Siele, police investigations quickly confirmed the recovered motorcycle was stolen.
After searching the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) database, officers identified the owner, a resident of Busia.
Siele further revealed that the owner, a health worker, stated his motorbike had been stolen earlier from the parking yard of Siaya Referral Hospital.
“The officers after searching the details of the motorbike from NTSA we found the owner was from Busia County. After contacting the motorbike owner he said his motorbike was stolen from parking at Siaya Referral hospital where he works,” said Siele.
He added, “We are waiting for him to come with the documents to confirm if he is indeed the owner of the bike.”
Inspector Siele used the tragic incident to issue a warning against mob justice, urging the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
He explained that there are better, legal ways to resolve such issues, and implored residents to cooperate with law enforcement.
“Let us not take the law into our own hands by lynching suspects, but let us hand them to police to process them for prosecution,” Siele stated.
Following the incident, police from Luanda Police Station collected the bodies of the two suspects and transported them to the Coptic Nursing Home Hospital mortuary.
