Explainer: How to Join Russian Army as a Foreigner

Share

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an agreement in 2015 allowing any foreign citizens, including Kenyans, to join the Russian military.

After the decree was approved, for foreigners to join Russia’s military they do not require Russian passport as any citizenship works.

However, there’s a complex process to be followed by foreigners willing to join the Russian military.

Generally, foreign citizens can enlist in the Russian military under a contract, offering opportunities in various roles.

Requirements to Join the Russian Military

Prospective recruits must travel to Russia and report to a local military enlistment office, known as a voenkomat, in any city along with documents like a passport, a residency permit, and any relevant educational or professional certifications.

Here, recruits apply, submit the needed documents, and go through several screening stages, including a comprehensive medical examination, psychological evaluations, and a Russian language test.

Candidates will be shortlisted and invited for interviews and assessments immediately after their application is reviewed.

If a candidate is done with all the previous stages, they will be offered a military service contract.

The contract has the time duration of the job, specific role, salary and other benefits.

Upon signing the contract, the recruit takes an oath of allegiance to the Russian Federation.
