Paul Ongili Owino, popularly known as Babu Owino, is the Member of Parliament (MP) of Embakasi East Constituency.

He is also a lawyer who has won several cases in court.

Babu was born on October 10th, 1989, and raised in Kisumu’s Nyalenda slum.

He earned the nickname “Babu” from his mother and childhood friends, which stuck with him throughout his life, while he supported his education by selling chang’aa.

Early Life and Educational Background

The Lawmaker attended Kisumu Township Primary School from 1995 to 2002.

After excellent performance in primary school, he joined Kisumu Boys’ Secondary School from 2003 to 2006, where he completed his A levels.

Thereafter, he enrolled at the University of Nairobi (UoN) in 2008, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science.

In 2012, he completed tertiary education, graduating with First Class Honors.

However, he returned back in UoN to pursue a degree in Law in 2013.

Additionally, Owino pursued a master’s in law, specifically in Public International Law

On Nov 12th, 2023, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Leadership from Weldios University, Benin.

He also secured another honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science from the City University of Paris in recognition of his leadership and service.

Babu Owino Political Background

He joined politics back in campus when he was elected as the chairperson of Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) in 2011, a role he held for almost a decade.

Before clinching power in Embakasi East Constituency, he also contested for the Westlands MP seat, which he lost to Tim Wanyonyi.

In August 2017 general elections, Owino was elected as member of parliament Embakasi east through the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.

He was re-elected in the 2022 general elections after beating his opponents, Francis Mureithi, Michael Ogada, and Joash Omwenga.

Net Worth

While Babu Owino has not publicly disclosed his net worth, as an MP, he earns approximately Ksh 710,000 in gross salary according to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

This includes allowances, such as Ksh150,000 for housing and Ksh 426,000 for basic allowances.
