KANU Secretary General George Wainaina is among six suspects arrested over the assassination of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was gunned down on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road.

Mbobu was driving home when gunmen ambushed his vehicle, spraying it with bullets in what police have described as a “well-coordinated execution.”

He was shot eight times at close range, killing him instantly. Detectives believe the murder was linked to longstanding financial disputes, with reports indicating the lawyer owed millions of shillings to clients and associates.

According to police sources, Wainaina allegedly met Mbobu just hours before the attack.

Subsequent raids on properties linked to the suspects uncovered large sums of cash, further strengthening investigators’ suspicions that the killing was tied to money matters.

Kyalo Mbobu Autopsy Results

An autopsy conducted at the City Mortuary confirmed that Mbobu died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and head.

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that the bullets caused massive internal bleeding, leaving the lawyer with no chance of survival.

LSK Condemns Incident

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has condemned the killing, terming it a direct attack on the rule of law and the safety of legal practitioners. LSK President Faith Odhiambo demanded swift prosecution of those behind the crime and called for enhanced protection of lawyers handling sensitive cases.

“The assassination of Advocate Mbobu is a chilling reminder of the dangers lawyers face in the line of duty. We demand justice for our colleague and immediate action to safeguard members of the profession,” Odhiambo said in a statement.

Earlier today, hundreds of lawyers took to the streets of Nairobi in a peaceful march from the Milimani Law Courts to the Office of the Inspector General of Police.

They carried placards demanding “Justice for Mbobu” and chanted slogans calling for accountability and an end to attacks on legal professionals.

Police say investigations are ongoing and hinted at more arrests in the coming days as they piece together Mbobu’s final hours.

George Wainaina Career

He served as Chief of Staff for Nairobi County during the administration of Governor Dr. Evans Kidero between 2013 and 2017.

In March 2023, he was appointed Secretary General of KANU.

Before that, he was National Executive Director for KANU.
