Kisii University was first established in 1965 as a Primary Teachers Training College, which was built on a 61-acre piece of land donated by the County Council of Gusii.

The Institution offers Certificate, Diplomas, Degrees, Master’s and PhD courses to its students and it is found in Kisii County.

In 1983, the tertiary institution was upgraded to a Secondary Teachers College, offering diploma programs.

The Government of Kenya assigned Egerton University to preside over the college as its campus in 1994.

In 1999, the Faculty of Commerce introduced the Bachelor of Business and Management, becoming the first degree program offered on the campus.

At the same time, the program operated alongside the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), which was later discontinued in 2001.

The University was established through a Government Legal Notice No.163 of 2007 as a constituent College of Egerton University on August 23, 2007.

On February 6, 2013, the late Former President Mwai Kibaki, through Legal Notice No 225, granted Kisii University Charter in accordance with the Universities Act 2012.
