The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued an urgent travel advisory to all Kenyans as thousands flock to the highways for the Christmas holidays, leading to massive gridlock on major transit corridors of the country.
The festive season has started and jams on Kenya’s main roads have been witnessed, with a number of them failing to get to their destinations on time.
In a statement signed by Ag. Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, the Authority acknowledged that traffic has “started to soar significantly,” leading to delays for many travelers attempting to reach their destinations.

To mitigate the gridlock and enhance road safety, KeNHA has outlined several critical directives for all road users:
Early Planning: Travelers are advised to plan journeys to allow for extra travel time and to strictly adhere to traffic regulations.
Alternative Routes: Motorists are encouraged to use available alternative routes to bypass known congestion hotspots.
Driver Discipline: The Authority emphasized the need to observe speed limits, maintain lane discipline, and avoid “overlapping” or reckless overtaking, which are primary causes of total traffic standstills.
PSV Compliance: Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators must adhere to approved passenger capacity limits and only use designated pick-up and drop-off points.
Driver Wellness: Drivers are reminded to ensure they are well-rested, sober, and fit to drive before embarking on long-distance trips.
KeNHA had earlier warned motorists of possible overnight disruption as traffic congestion leaves motorists and passengers stranded on major highways across Kenya.
In an official statement issued on December 20th, KeNHA said congestion is large in Nairobi-Nakuru road due to lane indiscipline and overlapping.

The Authority has raised an alarm over the increase in traffic volumes in various sections of the road across the country.
“The @KeNHAKenya wishes to notify motorists travelling between Nairobi and Nakuru that there has been a significant increase in traffic volumes, leading to congestion at various sections of the road. The congestion is largely due to lane indiscipline and overlapping,” KeNHA said.
