Dr. George Rae, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), has passed away.
His death comes as a double blow to the medical community, occurring just days after reports emerged of the veteran medic seeking public assistance.
The Office of the Governor of Kisumu confirmed the “untimely death” in a formal statement on Saturday, December 27, 2025, though the specific cause of death was not disclosed.
“Former CEO, JOOTRH and advisor on Partnerships & Resource Mobilisation, Kisumu County Department of Medical Services,” JOOTRH earlier said in a post.
“While in South Korea attending a conference aimed at strengthening healthcare systems for Kisumu County and Kenya, Dr. Rae suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. He is currently receiving life-saving specialised treatment in South Korea,” It added.

In his condolence message, Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o focused on Dr. Rae’s transformative impact on the healthcare system.
It is with profound sorrow, deep grief, and a heavy sense of loss that I convey my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and the entire healthcare fraternity following the untimely passing of Dr. George Rae, former Chief Executive Officer of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH),” Governor Nyong’o stated.
Governor Nyong’o’s tribute highlighted Dr. Rae’s character, noting that he was a “gentle yet firm leader” who approached challenges as both a learner and a leader.
“He believed in teamwork, listened attentively, mentored generously,” the Governor stated. “We have lost a dedicated son whose life’s work strengthened our health systems and restored hope to many.”
The County Government has extended its deepest sympathies to Dr. Rae’s family, friends, and colleagues. Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
“May his legacy of service, integrity, and compassion continue to guide us,” the Governor concluded.
