The government is set to establish new security training grounds in Samburu, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and West Pokot counties as part of efforts to strengthen internal security and professional policing.
Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen said the facilities will expand practical training capacity for both recruits and serving officers.
The new grounds will complement existing institutions at Kiganjo and Embakasi Police Training Colleges, allowing officers to undergo hands-on training under an enhanced curriculum.
The approach is designed to prepare security personnel for the complex realities of policing in regions affected by banditry and the illicit trade of firearms.
Murkomen made the announcement in Trans Nzoia County while speaking during the funeral of the late Mzee Michael Kigen Komen, the father of ICT Principal Secretary John Tanui.
According to Murkomen, the planned facilities will provide realistic training environments that mirror operational challenges faced by officers in the field.
He said the initiative will strengthen coordination between recruits and experienced officers, ensuring consistent standards across the service.
“These training grounds will complement what we already have in Kiganjo and Embakasi, providing practical lessons to both recruits and serving officers under an enhanced curriculum,” Murkomen said, adding that “improved training remains central to sustainable security gains.”

Alongside training reforms, the government is intensifying efforts to mop up illegal firearms in the Kerio Valley.
Murkomen said the state targets to collect between 2,000 and 3,000 illegal guns within the next year as part of a peace consolidation strategy.
“In the next six months, we must collect 2,000 to 3,000 guns. And we must burn them in the Kerio Valley, and the President William Ruto himself will oversee the process,” Murkomen said.
He issued a direct appeal to residents, saying, “I’m telling the people of Kerio Valley to leave banditry and ill practices. We want to move forward to the next phase of investment.”

Murkomen said visible social and economic improvements were already emerging in areas previously affected by insecurity.
“When I see the schools being opened, I see the children going to school, I see how people were eating meat and bread for Christmas under trees,” he said, adding, “I feel gratified because the investment the President has put in place in the last three years is bearing fruit.”
He expressed confidence that continued cooperation would yield faster results.
“I am very confident as a leader in this ministry that in the next six months God will help us, we will do even greater wonders, to make sure that our people are going to stay together,” Murkomen concluded.
