Popular Nairobi City matatu ‘MOOD,’ owned by President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto, was involved in a minor accident in Eldoret on the morning of Sunday, September 14, 2025.

George’s luxury matatu, famous within Nairobi’s vibrant matatu culture and regarded as one of the top “nganyas” on city routes, reportedly sustained slight damage but no injuries were reported among passengers.

The vehicle had traveled to Eldoret for the highly anticipated Maili Tisa Park and Chill event, where it was set to showcase its signature flashy design, booming sound system, and customized interior.

The incident has since sparked conversations online, with fans relieved that no one was hurt and praising the resilience of Nairobi’s matatu culture despite the setback.

It is not the first time that a matatu from George Ruto’s fleet is coming under scrutiny. Earlier this year, Moneyfest made headlines after a series of traffic violations.

Viral videos showed Moneyfest overlapping, overtaking recklessly, and carrying passengers hanging dangerously out of windows along Thika Superhighway.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) later impounded the vehicle, citing blatant disregard for traffic safety regulations.

Balancing Culture and Safety

For many Kenyans, “nganyas” like Mood and Moneyfest are more than just matatus, they are cultural icons that symbolize creativity, style, and urban identity.

Their flashy designs, themed artwork, and powerful sound systems make them a central part of Nairobi’s vibrant public transport scene.

However, incidents such as those involving Mood and Moneyfest have fueled debate over the thin line between cultural expression and road safety.

While fans defend the matatus as a unique Kenyan innovation, critics argue that reckless driving and disregard for regulations endanger passengers and other road users.

Authorities, including NTSA, have reiterated their warning to operators, even during entertainment events or showcases, traffic laws will be strictly enforced, and violations will not be tolerated.
