Scare at Restaurant as Robert Alai Draws Gun on Babu Owino

Tension and fear gripped Cedars Lebanese Restaurant in Kilimani after a verbal confrontation between Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai escalated into a frightening incident.

According to The Standard, the two politicians arrived separately and met at the hotel.

Eyewitnesses told The Standard that Babu Owino was seated with another man for a private lunch meeting when Alai entered, saw him, and walked straight to their table.

The Paper reports that the two politicians were engaged in a verbal confrontation as the restraint with Alai accusing Babu of planning online attacks against his wife through content creator Maverick Aoko.

However, the Paper reported that Babu Owino denied the allegations, stating that he did not know Alai’s wife and could not criticize her.

“Owino, in his defence, said he does not know Alai’s wife personally and has absolutely no reason to malign her,” The Standard wrote.

The confrontation escalated when Alai Alai took out his firearm, cocked it, and pointed it at Babu Owino.

The Standard reports that Alai attempted to pull the trigger several times, but luckily, the gun had not been cocked and jammed properly.

“Fortunately, the gun was not properly cocked and jammed. At that point, a senior police officer who was having lunch at the same bar sprang into action and wrestled the gun from Alai,” the paper quoted the source.

The officer, who was identified as Mohamed Amin Shurie, head of financial crimes at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), reportedly rushed in, subdued Alai, and disarmed him.

How it Ended and Request for Statement

A visibly shaken Alai left the restaurant immediately after officers disarmed him, while Babuo also walked out shortly afterwards after regaining his composure.

By the time of publication, attempts to reach Alai for comment had failed, while Babu’s lawyer said he would consult his client and issue a statement, but none had been released.

Maverick Aoko Comments on the Incident

Maverick Aoko, who has been mentioned in the escalations, later commented about the incident.

“Today, around 4 pm at Cedars, Lenana Rd, Robert Alai, in the Company of seven Officers, attacked Babu Owino, where Alai drew his Gun on Babu. One of them apparently hit Ongili on the neck with the Butt of a pistol. Babu was just out of stomach surgery, juzi Sad that it’s a Luo man they want to use to murder another Luo Awuoro Siasa,” Aoko wrote.
