Pelican Insurance Brokers Chairman James Mungai is Dead

Pelican Insurance Brokers (K) Limited has confirmed the sudden passing of its esteemed Chairman, James Njenga Mungai, the company announced on Monday, saying his death followed a short illness on December 30, 2025.

In a statement, the Board of Directors expressed profound sorrow and called his departure “a life well lived.”

Mr. Mungai, who served as Chairman from 2022 until his death, had a long history with the firm, joining as Financial Director in 1983 and later becoming Vice Chairman in 2012.

The announcement highlighted his pivotal role in guiding the brokerage’s strategic direction over several decades.

“While being very grateful for Mr. Mungai’s wise guidance and dedication during his time with us, we as the Board and all members of staff condole with the family during this period,” the statement read, offering condolences to his loved ones and praying for eternal rest upon him.

Family and Funeral Arrangements

Mr. Mungai was the cherished son of the late John Mungai Kabage and Jane Waithera Mungai, and a loving husband to Grace Wanjira Mungai.

He is survived by five children, including Jane Waithera Mungai and John Mungai Njenga, along with numerous grandchildren and extended family.

The deceased was also a brother to several siblings, many of whom preceded him in death.

The family has scheduled a Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on January 7, 2026, at 10:00 am, to be followed by internment at the family’s farm in Kiambaa, Kiambu County.

In its tribute, Pelican Insurance Brokers quoted 2 Timothy 4:7-8: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith,” reflecting the company’s admiration for Mr. Mungai’s enduring commitment to both his professional and personal life.

“In God’s hands you rest, in our hearts you remain forever,” the Board added, reaffirming its commitment to honoring his legacy of service and leadership.
