Bobi Wine Says Museveni Is Blocking Voter Register Release 8 Days to Election

Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, accused President Yoweri Museveni’s government of deliberately blocking the release of the National Voters’ Register just eight days before the general election, claiming the delay aims to conceal massive electoral fraud

In a strongly worded statement, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader said the Electoral Commission, chaired by Justice Simon Byabakama, has defied the law, which requires the voters’ register to be made available to stakeholders at least 14 days before polling day.

Bobi Wine alleged that the refusal to release the register is not procedural but political.

“Here is the reason Byabakama is still refusing to give us the National Voters’ Register, 8 days to the election, despite the legal command for them to avail it 14 days to an election,” Bobi Wine said, directly linking the delay to what he described as deep-seated irregularities within the register.

He claimed the “register contains widespread manipulation designed to favor the ruling regime,” insisting that “its exposure would undermine the credibility of the electoral process.”

Allegations of Systematic Voter Fraud

According to Bobi Wine, the Electoral Commission is aware of extensive flaws in the register, including “tens of thousands of multiple entries, inconsistencies in voters’ details, very many people who died years back, and yet their details are still on the register.”

He argued that “releasing the document would provide concrete evidence of electoral malpractice.”

The opposition leader stated that some of these irregularities had already been uncovered through citizen-led digital tools, thereby intensifying pressure on the authorities.

“When we exposed some of this fraud, the regime responded by arresting Dr. Sarah Bireete and the developers of the Fannon App,” he said, noting that the application allowed voters to independently verify their registration details.

Arrests and Intimidation Claims

Bobi Wine described the arrests as retaliation aimed at silencing whistleblowers and intimidating citizens from scrutinizing the electoral process.

He maintained that despite these actions, evidence of manipulation continues to surface.

“Even then, the voter location slips are exposing the criminal schemes on a daily basis. The Electoral Commission has previously denied accusations of bias and fraud, maintaining that it operates independently,” he said.

However, Bobi Wine dismissed these assurances, accusing the commission of serving “partisan interests” rather than the electorate.

Call for Public Action

In his sharpest remarks, the opposition figure declared that the current commission lacks credibility.

“There has never been an Electoral Commission as incompetent, partisan, and fraudulent as Byabakama’s,” he said, calling the situation a national crisis.

Bobi Wine concluded with a rallying call to the citizens, urging them to take collective action in defense of democracy.

“The people of Uganda must reclaim their country and put an end to all this nonsense,” he said, framing the election as a decisive moment for Uganda’s political future.
