Elon Musk has announced that X, formerly Twitter, will introduce a fully open-source algorithm within the next seven days, a move that is expected to change how content is ranked and distributed on the platform.
In a series of posts, Musk stated that the algorithm will be made public, including the code used for both organic and paid posts.
Updates will occur every four weeks.
Each update will have detailed developer notes to explain what has changed.
“Our new algorithm is going fully open source in seven days,” Musk said.
He added that the move aligns with X’s mission to promote free speech and transparency, noting that the company wants users and developers to understand how content is surfaced and to help improve the system through public feedback.
Musk further explained that the algorithm will be powered by Grok, X’s artificial intelligence tool, which will analyse more than 100 million posts made on the platform daily.
“So, we’re really just trying to show people content they’d be interested in,” Musk said, adding that Grok will process vast amounts of data to filter out spam and scam content before matching posts to between 300 million and 400 million users each day.

He noted that the scale of the operation requires significant computing power, as the system must sort through millions of posts and accurately match them with users most likely to engage with the content.
Chris Park, Director and Co-Head of the X Developer Platform, echoed Musk’s sentiments, confirming that the new algorithm will be open source within seven days and updated every four weeks.
“Our core mission is to connect humanity and enable free speech. Now we will show how, iterate publicly, and keep improving with all of you, for all of you,” Park said.
“X will become the most open and transparent major platform in the world, far more than Meta, Threads, YouTube, or anyone else.”

An open source algorithm is a set of instructions or rules for solving a problem that is made publicly available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute, which means that the code or algorithm is freely available to the public. Anyone can see how it works and can change it if they want.
