Senior Counsel Katwa Kigen, who was a member of President William Ruto’s defence team at the International Criminal Court (ICC), is among the candidates nominated as a Judge of the Court of Appeal.
Kigen was interviewed by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, as part of the process to fill 15 vacancies in the Court of Appeal. The interviews began on January 12, 2026.
He was among 35 shortlisted candidates initially announced in October 2025, following the closure of applications in July 2025.
Katwa Kigen is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with 30 years of legal practice. Over the course of his career, he has appeared in all levels of Kenyan courts and internationally, including the East African Court of Justice, the Sports Court in the United Kingdom (UK), and the ICC.

He was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1996 and currently practices at Katwa and Kemboy Advocates in Nairobi.

Kigen regularly handles cases before the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Industrial Court, and other specialised tribunals.
He holds a Master of Laws (LL.M) and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
