The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61% of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on January 15,  2026.

In a statement on January 17, Youssouf expressed sincere appreciation to Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his sterling leadership of the Joint African Union/; Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)/Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

Youssouf further reiterated the commitment of the African Union Commission to continue to support the promotion of democracy and effective governance on the continent.

Besides, he applauded the people of Uganda for their commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development.

Museveni Wins Again

President Museveni was declared the winner of the election, extending his four decades in power by another five years.

According to the results, Museveni gained 72% of the vote against 25% for his closest challenger, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

The election was marred by a days-long internet shutdown and rigging claims by Bobi Wibe, who rejected the outcome and called for peaceful protests.

Bobi Wine Dismisses Results

Wine said the electoral process was unfair, alleging that his polling agents were abducted before voting had even started.

He said he rejected the “fake” results and urged Ugandans to peacefully protest until the “rightful results are announced.”

Additionally, the opposition leader stated that he escaped to avoid being arrested by security forces who stormed his house on Friday night.

On the contrary, Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said Wine was not under arrest.

Rusoke said the politician was free to leave his house, but there was “controlled access” for others trying to go into the property to prevent people from using the premises to incite violence.
