The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 14-day notice to all roadside development operators along the James Gichuru Road Junction to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) stretch.

In a notice dated January 20, 2026, the Authority directed them to remove billboards, directional and advertisement signs, tree nursery beds, and other temporary structures within the road reserve.

KeNHA warned that any structures encroaching on the road reserve, including billboards that overhang from private property, will be considered road encroachment and subject to removal.

“Billboards erected on private property should not overhang the Road Reserve, as they shall be considered as road encroachment. All the Operators are, therefore, – through this notice, – directed to remove them within 14 days from the date of this Notice,” the authority stated.

The directive comes ahead of planned capacity enhancement, landscaping, and beautification works along this key section of the road, which, according to KeNHA, will pave the way for the implementation of the Project works.

“The Authority hereby notifies all roadside development operators from the James Gichuru Road Junction to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport of the commencement of Capacity Enhancement, Landscaping, and Beautification works on this section of the Road,” said KeNHA.

The Authority stated that the deadline for compliance is Wednesday, February 4, 2026. After this date, it will remove any remaining structures without further notice, at the owner’s expense.

President Ruto Announces Plans to Reconstruct Stretch Between JKIA and James Gichuru Road

The directive from the Authority follows President William Ruto’s announcement in December 2025 that work to beautify, landscape, and reconstruct the stretch between JKIA and James Gichuru Road Junction would begin in December.

This section of the road had suffered significant disruptions during the Nairobi Expressway construction.

President Ruto highlighted the difficulties motorists continue to face on the lower section of the Mombasa Road Expressway.

He said the project is intended to improve traffic flow and enhance the visual appeal of one of Nairobi’s busiest highways.

“With the Expressway now open and vehicles using the upper lanes, the lower road has experienced challenges. That is why, starting this December, we will reconstruct and beautify it, ensuring Nairobi reflects the true status of our nation,” the President stated.

The contract for the project has been awarded to China Road and Bridge Corporation.
