KenGen Breaks Silence After Turbine Incident at Ngong Wind Farm

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has issued a statement explaining an incident involving a wind turbine at its Ngong Wind Power Facility.

In a statement released on January 21st, KenGen said the isolated fire incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. on January 20, 2026, during a period of scheduled routine maintenance at the facility.

“KenGen wishes to confirm that at approximately 1500 hours on Tuesday, the 20th of January 2026, an isolated incident occurred at the Ngong Wind Power Facility involving one wind turbine,” said the Electricity company.

According to the power producer, no injuries were reported, and all personnel on site were safely accounted for following the incident which it credited to established safety protocols and a prompt response from the onsite emergency team.

The incident involved a 0.85MW wind turbine that was already offline at the time for maintenance work. As a result, KenGen stressed that there has been no interruption or risk to the electricity supply to the national grid.

Furthermore, the company noted that all other turbines at the Ngong facility remain fully operational.

At the same time the company stated that its safety team is currently working in collaboration with relevant safety and regulatory authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.

The goal of the probe is to establish the root cause of the incident, assess the total extent of the damage, and identify necessary corrective and preventive measures to avoid future occurrences.

The company reaffirmed that safety remains a core value and that they continue to uphold high health and safety standards across all operations.

KenGen further stated that they are fully cooperating with the relevant authorities and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

About the Ngong Wind Power Facility

KenGen’s Ngong Wind Power Facility is the first wind farm to be developed in East Africa. Situated in the northern foothills of the Ngong Hills in Kajiado County, approximately 25 to 35 kilometres from Nairobi.

The wind farm has a total installed capacity of between 25.5 and 26 megawatts, generated by 30 operational wind turbines spread across approximately 3,077.6 hectares of land. It is directly connected to the Kenyan national grid.
