A 24-year-old student from Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) has been arraigned in an Eldoret court following a chemical attack on his former girlfriend.

Tonny Kimwetich Kangor pleaded not guilty to charges of causing grievous harm before Senior Magistrate Kyne Odhiambo.

The prosecution alleges that on the morning of July 28, 2025, Kangor ambushed the victim, 23-year-old Evaline Jelimo Sum, in the SOS area of Kapsoya estate.

At the time, Jelimo, who was both his classmate and ex-partner, was reportedly walking from her residence to the institute to take her final exams.

Nature of the Incident

The incident, which occurred approximately five kilometers from Eldoret City, allegedly stemmed from the suspect’s inability to accept the end of their relationship. The victim suffered severe injuries to her face and neck after being doused with sulphuric acid during the confrontation.

According to the allegations, the motive behind the attack was the suspect’s anger over the victim’s refusal to reconcile after a several-month separation

According to the reports, the accused is said to have waylaid the victim as she walked alone on foot enroute to RVTTI, where they were both scheduled to sit for their final examination.

A peer traveling by motorcycle witnessed the aftermath and rushed the victim to St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment of her critical injuries.

It has been confirmed that both the complainant and the defendant were classmates enrolled in the Diploma in Electrical Engineering program at the institution.
