Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General, Edwin Sifuna, has addressed claims of forming a political alliance with Embakasi East Babu Owino, EALA MP Winnie Odinga, and Siaya Governor James Orengo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in a media interview on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the ODM Secretary General dismissed claims that he is involved in a secret political alliance with the three leaders ahead of the 2027 polls.
Sifuna, responding to questions about whether his frequent public appearances and similar political messaging with some of those leaders pointed to a coordinated political arrangement, clarified that their association is largely based on shared party membership and long-standing friendships rather than any formal political pact.
“First of all, we are members of the same party, and even by extension, some of my friends were members of the same coalition,” said Sifuna.
He explained that politics can be isolating, noting that he has lost several friends over differing political positions.
According to Sifuna, the ODM leaders he is often seen with share similar values and perspectives on national issues.
“When all of these friends of yours instantly start singing a different tune, you also need to look for comrades, people who see things from the same perspective as you,” he stated.

Sifuna stressed that their unity does not amount to a structured working arrangement. Instead, he said it is a reflection of like-minded leaders coming together at a time of political division within the party.
“At this particular point in time, there are people who have taken a certain position and others who have taken an opposing position. We need to be together to guide each other, validate each other, and even correct each other,” he said.
The senator also acknowledged criticism directed at him and his allies by some members of the party, saying such relationships help leaders keep one another in check.
Sifuna reiterated that he has no hidden political plans ahead of the 2027 polls, firmly denying the existence of any secret strategy.
“There’s nothing secret in politics. If there was a plan, you would know,” he said.
At the same time, the ODM Secretary General dismissed claims that he is a mole for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, allegations that have been made by some officials within the party.
“I am too big to be anyone’s mole. People should stop calling me Sifuna’s mole. You are not going to stop me from attending the burial of a colleague simply because Gachagua is present. When a colleague has been bereaved, I will attend the burial,” Sifuna said.
His remarks come amid growing divisions within the ODM, which has seen the emergence of two factions: one advocating cooperation with President William Ruto and supporting his re-election bid, and another opposing any political alignment with the president ahead of the 2027 polls.

Sifuna, alongside Winnie Odinga, Babu Owino, and James Orengo, has been pushing for the convening of a National Delegates Convention (NDC) to allow fresh elections of party officials, with their faction questioning the legitimacy of Dr Oburu Odinga’s appointment as party leader, arguing that it did not follow the party’s established procedures.
