Gachagua blasts Wajir Govt Over Ksh 200 Billion “Development Paradox” as Ramadan Approaches

Share

Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdulahi has come under fire from Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua for what he describes as acknowledging that the northern counties differ from the rest of the counties in terms of development.

On Thursday, February 5, 2026, Gachagua took to social media to accuse the county of embezzling nearly Ksh 200 billion that had been allotted since 2013.

According to Gachagua, the county is still marked by inadequate infrastructure, ungoverned areas, and a lack of electricity despite the distribution of these enormous sums.

“Since devolution began in 2013, Wajir County alone has received almost Ksh 200 billion in public funds. Yet, in the Governor’s own words, the county remains unattractive, characterized by poor infrastructure, ungoverned spaces, and a lack of electricity. It is hard to understand how a sitting two-term Governor and the current Chairman, Council of Governors can describe his own county this way after presiding over the spending of almost Ksh200 billion that were meant to fix exactly these basic challenges,” Gachagua wrote.

Gachagua has also noted that residents of Wajir County are being forced to believe that the county cannot spare a single penny of the funds allocated to address the ongoing and persistent water shortages.

The Water and Sanitation Crisis

The most stinging criticism centers on the perennial water shortage. Critics argue that the county failed to allocate even a fraction of its budget as little as 0.02% to solve the water crisis.

He has observed how difficult it is for families in the county to go about their daily lives without access to electricity, clean water, adequate sanitation, operational healthcare facilities, and dependable infrastructure. These are not extravagances. They are the absolute necessities for human life, human dignity, and the continuation of life.

“Are Reer Wajeer people really being asked to believe that the County could not spare even two shillings out of every a thousand ~ 0.02 % of its total budget to solve the recurring and perennial water shortages for its own people and the Ummah including women, children, the orphans and widows of Wajir, who still have to walk long distances every day in search of life’s most basic needs? SubhanaAllah !,” Gachagua noted.

Gachagua’s Demands

He therefore called on the county boss to fix the water problem, work on the sanitation system and have functional healthcare facilities for your people.

“For Heaven’s sake, Jiirow, fix the water problem, work on the sanitation system and have functional healthcare facilities for your people !” Gachagua stated.

According to Governor Ahmed, the former Deputy President’s criticism of Northern Kenya leaders stems from their choice to back the government.
