Last night, on Saturday, February 7, in Huruma Jonsaga, a 23‑year‑old woman was shot and killed by a police officer while helping her mother sell fish at their kibanda, according to community reports and an official statement from the Mukuru Justice Centre.
The victim, identified as Sheryl Adhiambo, was at her family’s roadside stall shortly before closing time when officers approached the area, witnesses said.
Within moments, she was struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead at a local health facility.
In a strong condemnation released today, the Mukuru Justice Centre called the killing senseless police violence and demanded immediate accountability.
“Sheryl Adhiambo was killed by a police officer last night at Huruma Jonsaga while helping her mother sell fish in their kibanda. We condemn this senseless police violence and demand that the officers responsible be arrested immediately,” the Mukuru Justice Centre said.
The justice centre added that this incident is “just one of many killings carried out by police,” and asked a stark question: “How many more lives must be lost before justice is served?”
The organisation urged independent investigations and swift legal action against the officers involved.

Social media responses to the killing highlighted longstanding frustrations with law enforcement conduct in Kenya.
One X user, @MkuuMsafiri, called for a complete restructuring of how police operate.
“I’ll repeat this, it’s time to DISARM THE @PoliceKE and have SPECIALLY TRAINED SWAT ARMED RESPONSE UNITS under OCPD command, to counter armed aggression,” the user wrote, arguing that other countries’ police forces do not routinely carry firearms.
Another online commentator, @KarimGidali, framed the issue as a broader fight against brutality, writing, “Police brutality knows no tribe, religion or region, Stand up against it. #JusticeForSheryl.”

The hashtag has been shared hundreds of times, spreading across community networks and advocacy pages.
Such responses reflect profound distrust between the residents and law enforcement.
Repeated incidents of the use of force have shrunk confidence in the police; this has again brought into light questions regarding training, oversight, and accountability mechanisms.
Yet, till now, community leaders and activists have continued demanding that he be charged and tried in a civilian court.
