The Federal Republic of Somalia was on Wednesday February 11, elected to the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026-2028 term, marking a historic diplomatic achievement for the nation in the Horn of Africa.

The election was announced during African Union proceedings ongoing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a statement released shortly after the vote, Somali officials described the outcome as a turning point in the country’s diplomatic trajectory.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia has been elected to serve on the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026–2028 term,” the statement read, terming the development “a significant milestone in Somalia’s diplomatic journey.”

The government further characterized the victory as evidence of growing continental recognition, stating that the election is, “a testament to the country reclaiming its rightful place in continental and international diplomacy.”

Officials added that Somalia’s election, “reflects the confidence and trust bestowed by fellow AU Member States.”

Diplomatic Milestone for Mogadishu

Somalia’s successful bid to join the PSC, the African Union’s standing decision-making organ for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts, signals an elevation of its diplomatic profile within Africa.

The nation has, over the years, been fighting to resolve internal security challenges as well as build a state, as indicated by this electoral victory, which is notable for being symbolic.

By gaining a seat on the 15-member body, Somalia places itself right at the heart of continental discourse on continental peace and security.

The PSC holds a vital role in the approval of peace support actions, the imposition of sanctions, as well as the facilitation of mediation initiatives.

Expression of Gratitude to AU Member States

Following the announcement, Somalia extended appreciation to countries that backed its candidacy.

“Somalia extends its sincere gratitude to all countries that supported and voted for its candidacy,” the statement said, emphasizing the collaborative nature of the election process.

Officials described the vote as a, “collective endorsement,” that, “underscores strong partnerships and a shared vision for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Africa.”

Diplomatic observers note that such endorsements are often the result of sustained regional engagement and coalition-building within AU blocs.

Commitment to Continental Peace and Security

As it prepares to assume its responsibilities for the 2026–2028 term, Somalia reaffirmed its policy priorities within the council framework.

“As a member of the PSC, Somalia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to advancing regional peace, security, stability, and constructive dialogue across the continent,” the government declared.

The country’s tenure on the council will coincide with ongoing security transitions in the Horn of Africa and broader African Union reforms aimed at strengthening collective security mechanisms.

Analysts say Somalia’s participation may also provide it with a platform to shape discourse around counterterrorism, post-conflict reconstruction, and regional cooperation.
