8 Ghanaians Killed in Burkina Faso Terror Attack

The Government of Ghana has confirmed that eight Ghanaian nationals have now died following a terrorist attack in Titao, in northern Burkina Faso, prompting renewed travel advisories and an emergency medical evacuation of injured victims.

In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities described the February 14, 2026, attack as a “despicable horror” and strongly condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all forms.

According to the statement, seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association were initially confirmed dead after terrorists attacked them while they were engaged in lawful trading activities in Titao.

The Ministry later confirmed that an eighth Ghanaian, who had been receiving medical treatment after sustaining serious injuries, has succumbed.

“The recent jihadist attack of February 14, 2026, in Titao, in the northern province of Burkina Faso, has now claimed eight Ghanaian lives,” the statement read.

Government Condemns Terrorism

The Government expressed solidarity with Burkina Faso and maintained its position against violent extremism.

“The Government of Ghana strongly condemns this mindless act of terror and expresses its solidarity with the Government and people of Burkina Faso in this dark hour,” the Ministry stated.

Authorities further emphasized the urgent need for enhanced regional security cooperation, noting that the incident underscores the importance of collective efforts to combat terrorism across West Africa.

President Mahama Orders Medical Evacuation

On the instructions of John Mahama, arrangements were made for the immediate air evacuation of all injured Ghanaian victims.

“On the instructions of President Mahama and with competent medical consultations, the Government of Ghana has decided to immediately conduct medical evacuation by air of all Ghanaian victims in Burkina Faso,” the release noted.

The Ghana Air Force is carrying out the medevac operation, with victims expected to arrive in Ghana the same day.

Embassies on High Consular Alert

The Ministry announced that Ghana’s embassies and high commissions in selected jurisdictions have been placed on high consular alert as authorities continue to monitor the situation.

“Ghana’s Embassies and High Commissions in selected jurisdictions are on high consular alert,” the statement said.

The Government also acknowledged the cooperation of the Burkina Faso authorities in facilitating interventions to protect Ghanaian citizens.

New Travel Guidelines for Ghanaians

In the wake of the attack, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outlined new travel guidelines for Ghanaian travellers, particularly those intending to visit high-risk areas within the sub-region.

The Government advised that Ghanaians planning essential travel to areas of concern should first contact the Ministry or relevant embassies for guidance.

“For Ghanaians already living in jurisdictions which are of concern and where violent extremist attacks have been recorded, we recommend that movement be restricted and that one maintains regular communication with our Embassies,” the statement advised.

Citizens have also been urged to ensure their identification documents are accessible at all times to facilitate swift consular assistance if necessary.

Condolences to Bereaved Families

President Mahama and the Government extended their deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

“President John Mahama and the Government of Ghana convey profound commiserations to the families and loved ones of all who have lost their lives,” the statement concluded.

The Government assured citizens that it is closely monitoring developments and will provide further updates as necessary.
