US Embassy Warns Americans Ahead of Uganda Politics

On the evening of September 22, 2025, the United States Embassy in Uganda issued a security alert urging American citizens living in or visiting the country to exercise heightened caution.

The warning comes ahead of the presidential candidate nomination period, scheduled for September 23 and 24, 2025.

Crime and Safety Concerns

According to the Embassy, these developments have raised concerns about potential risks of attendant unrest or violent incidents.

Among these concerns is the possible escalation of violent crime, including armed robbery, home invasion, and sexual assault.

The Embassy emphasized that both visitors and residents are exposed to such dangers, noting, “Crime can happen anytime.”

These warnings are consistent with the U.S. State Department’s broader country advisory, which classifies violent crime as a persistent threat in Uganda.

The advisory points out that in larger cities such as Kampala, Jinja, and Entebbe, as well as in border regions and more rural districts, law enforcement resources are strained.

Political Tensions and Public Gatherings

In addition to the threat of ordinary criminality, political events such as nominations and impending elections often draw public gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.

Such events can become volatile in settings where tensions are high. The U.S. Embassy advises citizens to be prepared for disruptions and to avoid crowds when possible.

Guidelines for American Citizens

The Embassy’s alert reinforces several standard safety measures: stay aware of your surroundings, avoid loudly displaying valuables, keep informed of local news, maintain contact with the Embassy in Kampala, and have a plan in case of emergencies.

This latest advisory underscores how political milestones, like nomination days, can significantly increase security risks in contexts where political competition is intense, public demonstrations are common, and law enforcement may be overwhelmed.

For Americans in Uganda, the message is clear: vigilance and preparedness are essential during this period.
