Turkana University: Courses, Fee, Location and Campuses

Turkana University College, a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), was founded on 27th January 2017 through Legal Notice No. 8 of 2017 under the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012.

The institution was inaugurated by President William Samoei Ruto, then Deputy President, marking a historic milestone for higher education in northwestern Kenya.

Founded to provide holistic education in humanities, science and technology, the university college aims to support the development and management of Turkana County’s vast natural resources.

Its mandate includes creating, preserving and disseminating knowledge through teaching, research and outreach to advance humanity.

As Kenya’s first public university in the expansive and resource-rich northwest, Turkana University College sits in Turkana County, the country’s second-largest county covering approximately 68,680 square kilometres.

The county borders South Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia, positioning the institution strategically within the East African region.

Location, Vision and Strategic Plan

Located in Lodwar town, the institution operates under the slogan “Scanning the Horizons,” with the motto “The Cradle of Knowledge (Chimbuko la Maarifa).”

Its vision is “to be a globally esteemed university in teaching, research and outreach,” while its mission focuses on generating and utilizing quality knowledge for societal advancement.

The six priority areas identified in the strategic plan for 2021-2025 include teaching and learning, research and innovation and outreach, information and communication technology, student services, resource mobilization and management, and finally, institutional transformation.

All these areas are key to the country’s development and the growing need for manpower in arid and semi-arid areas.

Schools, Courses and Fees

Turkana University College offers full-time, part-time, weekend, online and distance learning programmes across three schools: Education and Social Sciences; Business and Economics; and Science and Technology.

In the School of Education and Social Sciences, programmes range from PhD in Educational Planning and Management to Bachelor’s degrees in Social Work, Development Studies, Journalism, Disaster Management and Criminology.

Undergraduate tuition averages Ksh 50,000 per semester, while postgraduate fees range between Ksh 138,500 and Ksh 185,000 annually depending on the year of study.

The School of Business and Economics offers MBA, Master of Public Administration and Management, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Management and Bachelor of Science in Economics.

Diploma programmes, including Business Management and Oil and Gas Economics, cost approximately Ksh 20,000 per semester.

Within the School of Science and Technology, students can pursue PhDs in Environmental Science, master’s programmes in Public Health and Environmental Science, and undergraduate degrees in Computer Science, Renewable Energy Technology, Agricultural Economics, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Environmental Management and Community Health.

Science-based undergraduate programmes range between Ksh 55,000 and Ksh 67,000 per semester.

TVET, Short Courses and Admission

Beyond degree programmes, the university offers Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses in ICT, Community Health, Social Work, Corporate Governance, Medical Engineering and Project Management at Levels 4 to 6.

Short courses include Procurement Practice, Risk Management, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Governance, and Customer Service.

Applicants are required to submit duly filled forms to the Registrar (Academic Affairs), alongside academic certificates, identification documents and passport photos.

Application fees are Ksh 1,000 for certificate, diploma and bachelor’s programmes; Ksh 2,000 for postgraduate courses; and USD 50(approximately Ksh 6400) for international applicants.
