A Chinese-flagged fishing vessel hijacked off the coast of Puntland, Somalia, has been safely rescued, authorities confirmed on  March 2, 2026.

The incident raised concerns over maritime security in the region, known for past piracy activities.

The vessel, operating legally in Somali waters with authorization from both the Federal Government of Somalia and the Puntland regional authorities, was seized by armed assailants.

The Chinese Embassy in Somalia condemned the attack, calling it a “gravely malicious incident” that “endangered the lives of the crew and international maritime security.”

Chinese officials worked closely with Somali authorities throughout the crisis to ensure the safety of the crew and the recovery of the vessel.

The embassy stated that China will “continue to take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard the lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens and enterprises overseas.”

Maritime Security Context

While piracy off the Somali coast has declined significantly since its peak in the late 2000s, incidents like this highlight that risks remain.

Past hijackings have included ransom demands and threatened crew safety, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.

The successful rescue demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated diplomatic and security efforts, reinforcing China and Somalia’s commitment to maritime safety and the protection of lawful commercial operations.
