An investigation into the assassination of Charles Ong’ondo Were, former Kasipul Member of Parliament, has revealed a chilling story of betrayal, precision surveillance, and orchestrated violence.
Ong’ondo Were, who was elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), was killed on April 30, 2025, in Nairobi in a targeted shooting that had gripped the nation.
On the day of his death, Ong’ondo Were followed his usual schedule, leaving Bunge Towers in central Nairobi in his white Toyota Crown.
However, CCTV footage analyzed by a local media station, KTN shows a white sedan and a motorcycle following him across the city.
The vehicles appeared to trail him meticulously, stopping at key points including petrol stations and M-Pesa shops, signaling a level of surveillance beyond ordinary street crime.
Court evidence and the investigation suggest that Ong’ondo Were’s own bodyguard, Allan Omondi Ogola, played a critical role in the assassination.

According to prosecution testimony and CCTV footage, Ogola intercepted the MP’s vehicle and assisted in actions that enabled the attackers.
The CCTV footage revealed that Ogola opened doors, handled critical documents, and even managed the MP’s devices in a way that compromised his security, effectively facilitating the killing.
The betrayal by a trusted aide has sparked nationwide outrage and intense media coverage.
The MP’s vehicle was eventually stopped near the Ngong Road/Valley Road roundabout.
A masked gunman approached and fired multiple rounds through the car window, fatally wounding Ong’ondo Were.
Despite efforts from the driver and bodyguard, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Nairobi Hospital.
Forensic evidence presented in court confirmed the use of high-caliber firearms, linking the suspects to organized criminal activity.
The ongoing trial at Kibera High Court identified at least five suspects in the assassination conspiracy:
All defendants pleaded not guilty. The prosecution asserted that each had a distinct role from planning and financing to executing the attack with Ogola allegedly providing insider access that allowed the assassination to succeed.
The assassination of Ong’ondo Were shocked Kenya, raising questions about the security of public officials and the trustworthiness of personal aides.
President William Ruto and other national leaders called for swift investigations and accountability, described the attack as “targeted, deliberate, and deeply disturbing.”

As the trial continues, the nation watches closely. The unfolding evidence particularly the betrayal by Ong’ondo Were’s bodyguard has captured public attention and raised critical discussions about political safety, trust, and the role of law enforcement in preventing such targeted killings.
