Tourism Hit as Flooding Forces Closure of Amboseli Main Airstrip

Tourists and tour operators planning to fly into Amboseli National Park will have to adjust their travel plans after the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) announced the temporary closure of the park’s main airstrip due to flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains.

In a public notice issued on March 9, KWS said the Main Amboseli Airstrip is currently submerged following persistent rainfall in the area, making it unsafe for aircraft operations.

As a precautionary measure, all flights to the airstrip have been suspended until conditions improve and aviation safety can be guaranteed.

According to KWS, the closure is necessary to protect passengers, pilots, and crew members from potential risks associated with landing on a flooded runway.

“Aircraft operations to the main airstrip are temporarily suspended until conditions improve and the airstrip is deemed safe for landing and take-off,” the notice stated.

Despite the disruption, access to the popular wildlife destination remains possible. KWS has advised airlines and pilots to use the nearby Kimana Airstrip as an alternative landing point.

The facility is located approximately five kilometres from Kimana Gate, one of the main entry points to Amboseli National Park.

The arrangement will allow visitors to continue accessing the park, which is internationally known for its large elephant herds and scenic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Tour operators have welcomed the quick communication from the wildlife agency, noting that the alternative airstrip will help maintain tourism activities while safety measures are put in place.

KWS said it is closely monitoring the weather situation and the condition of the flooded airstrip.

Authorities have also urged travelers to remain in contact with tour operators and airlines for the latest updates as heavy rains continue to affect several parts of the country.
