The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned that several parts of the country are likely to experience heavy rainfall in the second week of March, following flooding witnessed in some regions during the first week of the month.
In its forecast published on Monday, March 9, 2026, Kenya Met listed areas expected to receive heavy rainfall during the period between March 10 and March 16.
According to the weatherman, rainfall is likely to decrease in spatial coverage and intensity over several parts of the country. However, occasional rainfall is expected to continue in a few to several areas in the southern parts of Kenya.
Isolated heavy rainfall events are still likely to occur in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the South Coast.
Daytime (maximum) average temperatures of more than 30°C are expected in several parts of the country, including the Coast, the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
Meanwhile, night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to fall below 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, parts of the North Rift, and in areas near Mount Kilimanjaro.
In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley regions, Kenya Met predicts that morning rains are likely to occur in a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected in a few to several areas, while night showers are likely to occur in isolated locations.

Counties within these regions include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori and Narok.
For Turkana and Samburu counties in the North-western Kenya region, the meteorological department forecasts sunny intervals during the day, with partly cloudy conditions at night. However, occasional rainfall is likely to occur in a few areas.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi and its environs, occasional cloudiness with light rain is expected in the mornings, giving way to sunny intervals. Afternoon showers are likely to occur in a few places and may occasionally spread to several areas. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy, although showers may occur in isolated locations.
Other counties in this region include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi.
Elsewhere, the North-eastern Kenya region, which comprises Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, is likely to experience sunny intervals in the mornings and afternoons. However, occasional rainfall may occur in a few places. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy, with occasional showers in some areas.

Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County in the South-eastern Lowlands region, are likely to experience morning rains in a few places. Afternoon and night showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, are also expected in some areas.
For the Coast region, which includes Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties as well as the Tana Delta, morning, afternoon, and night showers are likely to occur in a few places.
