Step-Sons Charged With Murder After Umoja Man Dies From Assault Injuries

A domestic dispute in Umoja, Nairobi, has taken a tragic turn after a 54-year-old man who had been hospitalized for more than two months died from injuries he allegedly sustained during an assault by his stepsons.

Nicholas Kamau Kagecho was reportedly attacked on the night of December 24 and 25, 2025, at his residence in Umoja. The incident left him with serious injuries that required urgent medical attention.

He was first rushed to Metropolitan Hospital, where doctors attempted to stabilize him. However, due to the severity of his condition, he was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

The incident sparked investigations by detectives who sought to establish what exactly happened on the night the victim was attacked.

Domestic Dispute Under Investigation

“Preliminary investigations indicated that the victim had allegedly been assaulted by two of his stepsons following a family dispute that escalated into violence,” said the Detectives.

Police identified the suspects as 29-year-old Brandon Githinji and 22-year-old Benard Lee Ngugi.

The two were arrested on December 28, 2025, as detectives began piecing together details surrounding the incident while the victim remained hospitalized.

Case Now Upgraded to Murder

Meanwhile, the victim remained in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital, where he was closely monitored by doctors for weeks.

Despite medical efforts to save his life, Nicholas Kamau Kagecho succumbed to the injuries on March 6, 2026, bringing an end to a prolonged fight for survival.

Suspects Initially Charged With Grievous Harm

As investigations progressed and medical reports confirmed the severity of the injuries inflicted on Nicholas Kamau Kagecho, the suspects were formally charged with the offence of grievous harm contrary to Section 234 of the Penal Code.

The court ordered that the two be remanded to Industrial Area Remand Prison pending further proceedings.

The charges against Brandon Githinji and Benard Lee Ngugi will now be upgraded to murder under Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.

The suspects remain in custody at Industrial Area Remand Prison as detectives finalize legal procedures to present the upgraded charges before the court.
