The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium will host a high-profile UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday night, March 11, as Real Madrid face Manchester City in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie.
The encounter also marks a historic moment, becoming the first matchup to be played in the knockout stages for five consecutive Champions League seasons.
Real Madrid are chasing a record-extending 16th European title but had to go through the knockout round playoffs after finishing 9th in the League Phase- just one point behind Manchester City.
Los Blancos struggled late in the phase, losing three of their final five matches.
However, after a 4-2 defeat to SL Benfica on matchday eight, the Spanish giants recovered by defeating the Portuguese side 3-1 on aggregate to secure their place in the last 16 for a remarkable 23rd consecutive season.
In domestic competition, Madrid has had mixed results.
They suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Getafe CF before edging past RC Celta de Vigo 2-1 thanks to a dramatic 95th-minute winner from captain Federico Valverde.
At the Bernabéu, Real Madrid have been strong in Europe this season, winning four of their five home Champions League matches and scoring 12 goals.
Their only defeat came in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City earlier in the competition.
Although Madrid has lost their last four UEFA matches against English clubs, their home record remains formidable, with only three defeats in its last 25 Champions League games at the Bernabéu.
They have also progressed from 13 of their last 15 round-of-16 ties and have won the first leg in 10 of their last 12 at this stage.

Manchester City, on the other hand, secured automatic qualification for the last 16 after finishing the League Phase strongly with 16 points from eight matches.
Their campaign included an impressive 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu, only their second win there in eight visits, as well as group-stage victories over SSC Napoli, Villarreal CF, Borussia Dortmund, and Galatasaray S.K.
Since their last European outing, City have maintained strong domestic form under manager Pep Guardiola, winning seven and drawing two of their last nine matches.
A recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest left them seven points behind Arsenal F.C. in the Premier League title race, but they quickly bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United F.C. in the FA Cup.
The upcoming match will also mark Guardiola’s 190th Champions League game as a manager, equalling the record held by Sir Alex Ferguson.
City’s away record in Europe has been inconsistent, with just two wins in their last eight Champions League matches on the road.
Historically, they have struggled in two-legged ties against Spanish teams, losing seven of their last ten.
However, recent trends offer encouragement, as City have lost only three of their last 18 UEFA matches against Spanish opposition and have already secured two away wins in Spain this season against Real Madrid and Villarreal.
“It will be a tough game against a great opponent, with great players and a great coach. It’s a very exciting and highly anticipated match for the fans.”
“We are fully aware that we need them with the sole objective of winning the game, which is how we’re going to approach it on the pitch. We are very motivated.”
“You all know how special the Champions League is for all of us, and with that mindset, desire, and enthusiasm, we want to play this game.”
“Emotions can influence matches like this, but we have come here many times. In these types of competitions, you never know what will happen; you have to face the match and the opponent with great respect.”
“When you play on the biggest stages and against the great teams, the better you manage the bad and good moments, the better.”
“I am not the one to underestimate the stature of this club, its players, its coach, and everything it represents. I know how difficult it is to face Madrid in this competition. I can’t rely on how they are because I’m not here; I don’t see them train or watch all their matches.”
“I focus on us, on the things we have done well and the things we can improve. We have to prepare for the match knowing that we need to be at our maximum level to try to advance in the knockout stage.”
Real Madrid: Tends to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, focusing on left-sided overloads, with a strong emphasis on counter-attacking speed.
Manchester City: Operates with high possession, usually in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 shape, with tactical nuances where full-backs move into midfield.

Real Madrid will be without several key players heading into the first leg.
Star forward Kylian Mbappe and influential midfielder Jude Bellingham are both expected to miss the match through injury, while Rodrygo, Eder Militao, Dani Ceballos, and Alvaro Carreras also remain sidelined.
David Alaba is doubtful with a calf issue, though Eduardo Camavinga has recovered and could feature in midfield alongside Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni.
Predicted lineups: Courtois, Alexander-Arnold, Asencio, Rudiger, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouameni, Camavinga; Guler, G. Garcia, Vinicius Jr
Manchester City has fewer injury concerns. Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, and Rico Lewis are all unavailable, but Guardiola is expected to field a strong lineup after resting several key players in their FA Cup win over Newcastle.
Erling Haaland is set to return to the starting lineup and will spearhead the attack alongside Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush.
Predicted Lineups: Donnarumma, Nunes, Dias, Guehi, Ait-Nouri, Bernardo, Rodri, O’Reilly; Semenyo, Haaland, Marmoush

The absence of key figures such as Mbappe and Bellingham could prove costly for Real Madrid against a Manchester City side that has already shown it can win at the Bernabéu this season.
While Madrid’s experience in the Champions League means they can never be ruled out, City’s attacking depth and recent form may give them the edge in the first leg.
