The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has released a traffic advisory indicating alternative routes for drivers using the roads linking Nairobi and Nakuru in preparation for the highly anticipated Safari Rally set to take place between March 12 and March 15, 2026.
In a public notice titled “Vasha Traffic Update,” the highways authority warned motorists to prepare for heavy traffic congestion along the Nairobi–Naivasha corridor due to increased travel by spectators heading to rally stages.
The advisory is intended to help ease movement along the busy route during the international motorsport event.
“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) hereby issues a traffic advisory and alternative routes to ease anticipated traffic congestion caused by the public heading to the Safari Rally event from 12th to 15th March, 2026,” the notice stated.
The agency further cautioned heavy commercial vehicle drivers against parking along undesignated sections of the highway, noting that enforcement teams will take strict action against offenders.
“The Authority advises all truck drivers not to park at any undesignated locations on the highway, as violation of this directive shall lead to immediate arrest,” KeNHA said in the advisory signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli.
To minimize congestion, the authority released several recommended routes motorists can use when traveling between Nairobi, Naivasha and Nakuru during the rally period.
One of the options is The Scenic Route, which runs from Nairobi through Rironi Flyover at Magumu before connecting to Njambini, Ol Kalou, Dundori and finally Lanet.
Another route is known as The Adventure Route. It connects Nairobi to Naivasha before proceeding to Engineer, Ol Kalou, Dundori, and finally Lanet.
KeNHA also highlighted The Thika Trail, an alternative that connects Nairobi to Thika before proceeding through Magumu, Ol Kalou, Dundori and Lanet.
“The Alternative routes are indicated below: The Scenic route: Nairobi – Rironi – Flyover (Magumu) – Njambini – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet,” the authority stated in the notice.
“The Adventure Route: Nairobi – Rironi – Naivasha – Engineer – Olkalou – Dundori – Lanet,” the statement added.
Motorists heading to Nakuru were also advised to consider the Suswa Shortcut, which passes through Ngong and Suswa before connecting to Narok and later Nakuru.
“The Suswa Shortcut: Nairobi – Ngong – Suswa – Narok – Nakuru,” the authority said while listing the alternative routes meant to ease pressure on the Nairobi–Naivasha highway.

The advisory comes as thousands of rally fans are expected to travel to Naivasha and surrounding areas for the annual motorsport event, which attracts both local and international spectators.
KeNHA emphasized that the measures are part of broader traffic management efforts aimed at maintaining safety and smooth travel during the busy rally weekend.
“The Authority continues to ensure your safety on all our highways,” the statement concluded.
