Schools in Trouble as Ichung’wah Moves to Ban Uniform Sales in Schools

Share

The National Assembly Majority Leader, Kimani Ichungwa, has urged the government to introduce policies that would stop schools from directly selling uniforms to learners, or rather, the learners’ parents.

Kimani Ichungwa is a member of parliament of the Kikuyu constituency. He said such a move would allow parents to choose to purchase school uniforms from shops that they want to buy from.

Speaking in Uriri on 15th March, Kimani Ichungwa stated that many schools currently tell parents to buy uniforms from the institution directly at unfair prices.

He said that he had submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Education and he expects that the suggested changes will soon be implemented.

Ichungwa further called on the ministry to develop policies that will ensure learners who move from grade 1 to junior secondary within the same school retain the same uniform, to avoid parents from buying two different uniforms and the child is still in the same school.

The MP also said that not purchasing uniforms directly from the school will help ease the financial burden on parents, especially those who have more than one child.

He also raised concerns about some schools across the country that have no learners in grade 10.

He urged the government to put measures in place that will ensure all senior secondary schools have students and that all learners across the country receive quality education.

The Government has also previously warned schools against forcing parents to buy uniforms directly from them, saying that parents should be allowed to purchase uniforms from vendors of their choice.
