The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced the rollout of the East African Community (EAC) Customs Bond system, a move aimed at improving regional trade and customs operations across member states.
In a public notice issued by KRA on March 16, 2026, the tax authority confirmed that the new EAC Customs Bond will officially take effect on March 23, 2026, following its launch by regional Heads of State earlier this month.
According to KRA, the bond was officially introduced during the EAC Heads of State summit held on March 7, 2026, where leaders endorsed the system as part of broader efforts to enhance cross-border trade efficiency within the East African bloc.
The authority said the bond will be used by customs agents handling goods moving across EAC borders, replacing existing processes with a unified regional framework.
KRA stated that all necessary technical preparations have already been completed to ensure a smooth rollout of the new system.
“Following the official launch of the East African Community Customs bond by the EAC Heads of State at the summit held on March 7, 2026, the Kenya Revenue Authority hereby informs all Customs Agents that the EAC Customs Bond will effectively be rolled out on March 23, 2026,” the notice read.

The authority further emphasized that system upgrades and enhancements required for the implementation have already been finalized.

KRA said it will work closely with the EAC to ensure customs agents and other stakeholders transition smoothly to the new bond framework.
The tax authority also pledged to provide training and sensitization programs to ensure users understand how the new system works.
