Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has broken his silence following a building collapse at Blue Estate in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi, on Monday, March 16, 2026.

In a statement, the Nairobi City County administration, led by Sakaja, conveyed its condolences to the families of the four people who died in the incident.

The county government confirmed that search and rescue operations at the scene have been concluded.

“Search and rescue operations at the scene in Kamukunji Sub-County have now been successfully concluded, and response teams have been demobilised,” the county said.

According to the county administration, the collapsed structure was among buildings located along the Nairobi River riparian corridor earmarked for removal under the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Programme.

The administration said four male victims were rescued from the debris.

Two were taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment, while two received first aid at the scene.

Four unidentified male bodies were also retrieved and handed over to the police.

The multi-agency rescue operation involved the Nairobi City County Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, firefighters, the National Disaster Management Unit, the Disaster Response Battalion of the Kenya Defence Forces, and the Kenya Red Cross.

Authorities have since handed over the scene to the Kamukunji Assistant County Commissioner. The area has been cordoned off due to safety concerns, with an adjacent building showing signs of possible collapse.

Residents Living in Riparian Areas Advised to Relocate

Preliminary reports indicate that the victims were salvaging steel bars and other construction materials from the abandoned structure when it gave way.

The Nairobi City County, through the Department of Urban Development and Planning, has urged residents living along riparian areas and riverbanks to relocate from high-risk zones, especially following recent heavy rains that have raised water levels in several rivers.

The incident comes months after another building collapse in South C, Nairobi, on January 2, 2026, near a shopping centre along Muhoho Avenue.

The building had been approved for 12 storeys by the National Construction Authority, Nairobi County Government and National Environment Management Authority. However, construction had exceeded the approved height, reaching between 14 and 16 floors at the time of collapse.
