DCP Breaks Silence on Claims Linking Gachagua to Woman’s Death

Share

The Democratic Change Party (DCP) has released a statement that categorically dismisses the claims that the former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, was involved in the murder of blogger Maureen Gathigia Kinyua.

The party termed the claims as misinformation, urging people to be careful in the information they disseminate.

In the press release, the party sought to clarify that Maureen Gathigia Kinyua died in a road accident in 2019, not in circumstances that would classify her death as murder.

The statement comes at a time when the online community has been filled with speculation regarding the death of the blogger, with some claims attempting to link her death to some politicians, an act the party termed as misleading and harmful.

According to the DCP, official investigations conducted at the time of the incident clearly established the cause of death, urging the public and media to rely on verified records rather than circulating unsubstantiated claims.

Official Account of the Incident

“Maureen Gathigia Kinyua tragically passed away on May 24, 2019, in a road traffic accident near Sagana Catholic Church in Mathira, Nyeri County,” the statement read.

“Investigations into the incident classified it as a hit-and-run, and there is no official evidence linking her death to murder or foul play,” DCP added.

The party further noted that the case was handled through the judicial system, with the driver involved formally charged.

“The driver involved, Jackson Ng’ang’a Njoria, was subsequently charged in Karatina Court with causing death by dangerous driving,” DCP stated.

“He denied the charges and was later released on a Ksh 150,000 bond while awaiting further legal proceedings,” the statement read.

Misinformation Concerns Raised

DCP expressed concern over what it described as a dangerous trend of misinformation, particularly on social media platforms.

“Despite these facts, misinformation has circulated online suggesting that Maureen’s death was a murder,” the statement continued.

“Such claims are unverified and baseless, and they risk causing unnecessary distress to her family, friends, and supporters.”

The party warned that spreading unverified allegations could undermine public trust and distort factual narratives, especially when tied to prominent political figures.

Call for Responsible Leadership and Reporting

The statement also asked the leadership and media practitioners in the country to exercise responsibility in addressing the issue at hand.

According to DCP, the statement indicated that media experts and civil society leaders asked the public figures in the country, including President Ruto, to exercise caution by avoiding the reporting of claims that are not yet ascertained.

The party also indicated that accurate reporting is crucial in maintaining integrity and the dignity of the families involved in the tragedy.

Speculative reporting not only misinforms the public but also increases the suffering of the families involved.

Remembering Maureen Kinyua

DCP concluded by urging Kenyans to honor Maureen Gathigia Kinyua for her contributions rather than focus on disputed claims about her death.

“Maureen Gathigia Kinyua was known for her vibrant online presence and her engagement with Kenyan social issues through blogging and social media,” the statement said.

“Her untimely passing was deeply felt in the community, and remembering her life should focus on her contributions rather than unfounded speculation about the circumstances of her death.”

The party called on media houses, digital platforms, and individuals to uphold truth and accuracy.

“We urge media houses, online platforms, and individuals to prioritize verified information and respect the truth surrounding this tragic event.”
