Huduma Kenya has officially confirmed that applications for replacements of national identity cards will now be offered at no charge in line with an earlier instruction given by President William Ruto.
In a statement shared on its official X platform, Huduma Kenya announced, “Getting a replacement National ID is now free. Drop by your nearest Huduma Centre today and get sorted.”
The move is expected to ease access to identification documents for thousands of Kenyans, particularly first-time applicants and those seeking replacements.

President Ruto had earlier directed that both first-time ID applications and replacements to be issued at no cost, emphasizing the need to remove financial barriers that prevent citizens from getting access to essential government services.
National identity cards are a critical requirement for accessing services such as banking, education, and government programs and this is a significant relief for many.
Huduma Kenya also issued an apology following earlier confusion surrounding the implementation of the directive. Initially, some centres continued to charge fees, showing the absence of formal guidelines to put in place what the president said.
The agency acknowledged the inconvenience caused to Kenyans during the transition period and assured the public that the matter has now been resolved.

With the new directive now in effect, citizens can visit any Huduma Centre nationwide to apply for replacement IDs without paying any money.
The government says the initiative is part of wider efforts to enhance service delivery to Kenyan citizens and ensure inclusivity in access to vital identification documents.
