Kenya Met Issues Fresh Heavy Rain Warning

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a heavy rainfall advisory, warning residents across multiple counties to prepare for moderate to heavy rains from 19th to 24th March 2026.

The rainfall is expected to intensify to more than 20 millimeters in 24 hours, with peak intensity predicted between 20th and 23rd March.

Rainfall may reduce on 24th March, it is expected to continue over the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley and Nairobi.

Counties most at risk include Turkana, Samburu, Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Garissa, and parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera and Tana River.

Residents Warned to Take Precautions

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to be on the lookout for floods, flash floods, and poor visibility.

“People are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.” The advisory stated.

Landslide-Prone Areas Remain Vulnerable

Communities living in landslide-prone regions, particularly around Mount Kenya, the Aberdare Ranges and other hilly areas, are advised to remain vigilant. Authorities warn that the combination of heavy rainfall and steep terrain increases the risk of landslides, and residents should take all necessary safety measures.

Government Agencies on High Alert

The advisory was addressed to the Presidency, all Cabinet Secretaries, the National Intelligence Service, Kenya Red Cross, Kenya Ports and Maritime Authorities, the National Disaster Operations Centre, and County Directors of Meteorological Services, among others.

Authorities have called on the public to stay informed, follow safety guidelines, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains. Updates will be issued promptly if there are any changes to the rainfall forecast.
