A wave of anxiety has gripped motorists across parts of the country following reports of fuel shortages at several petrol stations, sparking fears of a looming crisis.
In response, the government has moved to calm the situation, assuring the public that there is sufficient fuel supply nationwide despite the temporary disruptions.
In a statement shared with Belgut MP Nelson Koech during a live interview on Monday, March 23, Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban attributed the shortages to operational challenges, hoarding by oil marketers, and panic buying driven by speculation over rising global prices.
“We have sufficient stock in the country, and we had an operational issue with super petrol,” Liban said, adding that recent price speculation had triggered panic buying over the past two weeks.
He further noted that the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is addressing cases of hoarding, revealing that over 100 million litres of super petrol have already been released into the market, enough to stabilize supply for more than 10 days.
The government maintains that the situation is under control and urges motorists to remain calm as normal supply resumes.
The government attributed the shortages largely to market reactions, including speculation over potential price increases and consumer panic buying, which has placed unexpected pressure on supply chains.
“The EPRA is currently dealing with hoarding by oil markets due to the anticipation of price jumps,” the statement noted.

According to the PS, some oil marketers had limited stock earlier in the week, a situation that may have worsened the apparent shortage in several regions.
“On the supply, many oil marketers who were lean on Thursday could have exacerbated the situation,” the statement explained.
Authorities have pointed to recent supply injections as a key factor expected to ease the situation in the coming days.
The government insists that the shortages are temporary and not indicative of a systemic failure.

“101 million litres of super petrol hit the system, and for more than 10 days’, consumption is expected to ease the situation,” the statement said.
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has also intensified oversight to curb hoarding practices and ensure fair distribution across the country.
Officials warn that enforcement measures will be taken against marketers found manipulating supply for profit.
