Raphael Tuju was born on March 30, 1959, in Siaya County in the Nyanza region in Kenya. Tuju was raised in a modest rural setting in a large family.
He was brought up by his mother, Mary Odiyo Tuju, who emphasized discipline and education to him.
Tuju went to Majiwa Primary School before joining Nakuru West Primary School and later joined Starehe Boys’ Centre for his high school education.
He then proceeded to the United Kingdom, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester.
Tuju’s Career Path
Before entering politics, Tuju built a strong reputation in journalism and communications.
He began his broadcasting career at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, where he worked as a television journalist and news anchor.
He later joined Kenya Television Network (KTN) in the early 1990s, becoming one of the station’s pioneer news anchors and helping in shaping Kenya’s emerging private television sector.
Beyond newsroom work, Tuju established himself as a documentary producer and a communications consultant.
Awards He Got
He became the first African television producer to win an International Emmy Award for a documentary focusing on health and development issues, particularly HIV/AIDS awareness and gender empowerment programmes.
Between 1992 and 2001, Tuju served as founder and director of Ace Communications, a communications consultancy firm that produced documentaries, television and radio commercials, and strategic public information campaigns for governments, international agencies, and private institutions.
Through the firm, Tuju worked with many organisations, including the World Health Organization, World Bank, United Nations Development Programme, USAID, and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development.
He also contributed opinion columns to The East African Standard, which helped him in strengthening his profile as a communications specialist before he transitioned fully into politics.
