Share

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced that it will take over the management of medical cover for officers of the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), including their eligible dependents, effective 12:00 a.m. on  April 1, 2026.

In a notice issued on March 30, SHA CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the transition will be under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund.

She emphasized that the change will ensure continuity of care with no interruptions, stating:

“SHA is working closely with relevant institutions and healthcare providers to ensure a smooth and seamless transition for all officers and their dependents,” Mwangangi said.

Officers are reminded that their current medical cover will remain valid until 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2026, after which SHA will assume responsibility.

SHA Transition Guidelines

The Authority has provided clear instructions to facilitate a smooth handover:

  • Update Dependants -Officers should ensure all dependents are correctly declared to guarantee seamless access to services.

Dependants can be added via dialing *147# or visiting SHA or Afya Yangu.

  • Ongoing Hospital Admissions -Officers or dependents already receiving hospital treatment will continue to receive care uninterrupted from 12:00 a.m. on  April 1, 2026.
  • Non-Contracted Facilities- For treatment in facilities not contracted by SHA, arrangements will be made to transfer patients to SHA-contracted facilities for continuity of care.
