Ruto Breaks Silence on Gikomba Demolitions

Share

President William Ruto has addressed the ongoing demolitions at Gikomba Market, stating that the move is part of the government’s broader plan to modernize markets across the country.

Speaking during a live address, Ruto noted that Nairobi leaders had earlier asked him to redevelop Gikomba.

He added that the government will not leave the capital behind in its upgrade programme. He stressed that the new market will be clean and organized.

He also dismissed claims that the demolitions are political or based on ethnicity. Instead, he warned leaders against creating division.

“We are going to transform Gikomba into a national trading hub for business people,” Ruto said.

He explained that the first phase, known as the Linear Market, has already started. It will host about 5,000 traders.

He said the government has set aside KSh 800 million for this phase. It has also committed an extra KSh 3 billion.

In addition, a KSh 5 billion modern market will be built at the same site.

“And the traders themselves have an agreement with me—forget about petty politicians looking for cheap publicity,” he added.

He said this is the first time such a major investment is being made in Gikomba.

Background and Concerns

The demolitions began early this week, with structures brought down in phases to pave the way for construction.

The exercise started on Monday and continued into the following days, catching many traders off guard. Some arrived at their stalls only to find sections already marked or cleared.

The move disrupted normal operations in the busy market, which serves thousands of traders and customers daily.

Traders say the timing of the demolitions has affected their businesses. Many depend on daily sales to survive, and the sudden clearance slowed their income. Some reported losses while trying to move goods to safer areas.

Others raised concerns about the lack of clear timelines for relocation and reconstruction.

Gikomba has long faced challenges such as congestion, poor drainage, and repeated fire outbreaks. Despite this, it remains one of Nairobi’s most important trading hubs, especially for second-hand clothing.

Government Concerns

Even so, the government insists the project will bring long-term benefits. Ruto said the new market will be safer and more structured. He added that it will improve working conditions for traders.

President William Ruto maintained that the goal is to restore dignity and boost business.
