Garry Conille Appointed UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya

The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, has appointed Garry Conille, the former prime minister of Haiti, as the new UN resident coordinator in Kenya, a role he assumes with the approval of the Government of Kenya, effective April 1, 2026.

According to a statement from the United Nations dated April 1 2026, Mr. Conille will lead the coordination of UN development, humanitarian, and policy initiatives in the country.

The UN says Mr. Conille brings over two decades of experience in international development, humanitarian affairs, and public administration.

His career has been marked by leadership roles both within the United Nations system and in national governance.

Conille’s Service

Most recently, he served as Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), where he championed initiatives that aimed at improving child welfare, strengthening health systems, and addressing systemic inequalities.

The UN report also notes Mr. Conille’s service as UN Resident Coordinator in Jamaica and Burundi, where he coordinated development programs, engaged with governments, and strengthened partnerships with civil society.

Furthermore, he also held the position of Regional Director for the Africa Region at the United Nations Office for Project Services and led the Millennium Development Goals Support Unit at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Conille At UN

Conille began his career with the United Nations in 1999 at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Haiti.

Outside the UN, the organization’s statement highlights that Mr. Conille also served as Prime Minister of Haiti on two occasions, most recent being from May to November 2024, leading efforts to address governance reforms, humanitarian crises, and national security challenges.

He has also held leadership roles including under secretary general for Programmes and Operations at the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Senior Advisor to former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on the UN High Level Panel on the Post 2015 Development Agenda, and Chief of Staff to former US President William J. Clinton in his role as United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti.

Education

Mr. Conille holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at the State University of Haiti and a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.

With this appointment, the UN is expecting Mr. Conille to strengthen the organization’s coordinated efforts in Kenya, working closely with government agencies, development partners, and local communities to address national priorities, promote sustainable development, and enhance humanitarian action.

His blend of international experience and national leadership is seen as a strong asset in advancing the UN’s mission in Kenya
