Kenya Met Warns Boats Likely To Fill With Water In Kenya, Somalia And Tanzania

Share

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a warning that strong winds and fluctuating sea conditions across the coastal waters of Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania could make small boats unstable and likely to fill with water.

Fishermen, marine transport operators, and coastal communities have been urged to closely monitor daily weather updates before heading out to sea.

According to the latest marine advisory and 7-day forecast issued on April 3, 2026, winds over the waters bordering Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania are expected to vary between easterly, northerly, and south-south-west directions.

Wind speeds are forecast to range from 1 to 35 knots, with typical conditions of 2 to 20 knots (1-10 m/s) throughout the period.

These winds may generate slight to moderate sea conditions, but can still pose risks to small vessels when they strengthen or shift direction.

The forecast further indicated that wave heights are expected to range between 0.1 metres and 1.8 metres (0.3-5.4 feet) in the coastal and offshore waters of the three countries, producing conditions that fall under light breeze to fresh breeze levels.

“Mostly Northerly to South-South-Easterly winds are expected over Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania waters with wind speeds of 1 to 35 knots throughout the forecast period,” the advisory noted.

Small Boats Particularly Vulnerable

Authorities highlighted that small boats and crafts are especially prone to the effects of these winds and waves.

Strong waves can force water into vessels, reducing stability and increasing the risk of capsizing.

The department specifically warned that there is a likelihood of boats filling with water, a situation that can compromise both stability and safety.

Safety Precautions for Marine Activities

To reduce risks, marine officials advised that small boats avoid deep-sea operations during periods of strong winds or rough waters.

Key safety measures recommended include;

  • Checking daily marine forecasts
  • Avoid sailing during strong winds
  • Ensuring boats are equipped with safety gear
  • Monitoring changes in sea conditions
