A UK coroner has concluded that 79-year-old Edgar Riches, a British national, died on March 13, 2025, after being struck by a vehicle in President William Ruto’s motorcade while crossing Ngong Road in Nairobi.
Dorset Senior Coroner Brendan Allen confirmed that Riches was lawfully using a designated pedestrian crossing when the incident occurred.
The investigation revealed that the driver of the Ministry of the Interior’s Toyota Land Cruiser Prado was speeding and failed to yield to Riches, causing fatal polytrauma injuries consistent with a high-impact collision.
No police or ambulance services attended the scene immediately, raising concerns about the handling of the incident.
Coroner Allen highlighted the challenges of investigating overseas incidents, noting, “There are always difficulties in obtaining evidence from outside jurisdictions. Some countries are more forthcoming than others.”
The inquest relied on a post-mortem report and a statement from the Office of the Inspector General for the National Police Service, including CCTV footage review.

The motorcade driver was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and pleaded guilty on March 15, 2025.
He was fined Ksh 100,000 (approximately £575) and avoided jail time.
The coroner ruled the death a road traffic collision, stating there was enough evidence to conclude the circumstances despite information gaps from Kenya.

Riches’ family expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome. His daughter, Pauline Olden, said, “My father was in the final part of his charity walk, which he does every year, to raise money for the country he loves visiting. He was tragically killed while crossing at a designated pedestrian crossing by a driver going far too quickly.”
She added, “The police car and ambulance did not stop, and the driver was fined the equivalent of a £575 fine. He was able to pay it and move on with his life, but we can’t. Justice has not been served.”
