There has been a high increase in demand for skilled individuals in journalism, media, and communication.
Today, students who wish to venture into careers in the above fields have a variety of universities at which to study; both public and private universities offer different courses, practice sessions, and timelines to complete one’s education.
While undertaking a degree in journalism and related media subjects at the majority of the public universities in Kenya takes four years (usually split between two semesters each year with no long holidays).
Students at private universities like Mount Kenya University can choose to take their courses within two and a half years without long holidays.

These universities offer subjects like communication, journalism, film, animation, digital media, public relations, and gaming technologies.

The universities such as Rongo University, Kibabii University, Nairobi University, Multimedia University, Masinde Muliro University, Maseno University have always been associated with well-equipped journalism facilities.
They expose students to practical activities through the use of computer studios, cameras, and other technologies used in media production.
Such practical training helps graduates develop necessary media-related technical skills.
A number of universities include industrial attachments in their study programs.
It is clear that institutions like Rongo University, Maseno University, Kisii University, and Kibabii University offer opportunities for students to engage in industrial attachment in the third year.
Masinde Muliro University offers the same in the fourth year.

For one to join a bachelor’s course in journalism and media, they need to attain a mean grade of C+ in KCSE, together with a C+ in either English or Kiswahili.
However, some universities accept a C (Plain) in English or Kiswahili, provided that the mean grade is C+.
Self-sponsored candidates should be able to join their preferred institutions without applying through KUCCPS, but government-sponsored candidates have to do so after opening.
